How Do The Pirates’ Hitters Compare?

Just for fun I decide to take a look at Bill James Projections for the Pirates and compare them to 2011 NL average for each position. I’m not going to give any commentary here instead I will just present the numbers and let the reader be the judge. The two stats for hitters I am going to use are OPS and wOBA. I will do the pitchers at a later date.

Catcher

Rod Barajas (2012 Projection): .677 OPS, .288 wOBA

Michael McKenry (2012 Projection): .691 OPS, .304 wOBA

2011 NL Average: .708 OPS, .307 wOBA

1st Base

Garrett Jones (2012 Projection): .776 OPS, .338 wOBA

Casey McGehee (2012 Projection): .732 OPS, .319 wOBA

2011 NL Average: .801 OPS, .338 wOBA

2nd Base

Neil Walker (2012 Projection): .758 OPS, .329 wOBA

2011 NL Average: .699 OPS, .302 wOBA

3rd Base

Pedro Alvarez (2012 Projection): .761 OPS, .333 wOBA

2011 NL Average: .705 OPS, .303 wOBA

Shortstop

Clint Barmes (2012 Projection): .696 OPS, .300 wOBA

2011 NL Average: .688 OPS, .298 wOBA

Left Field

Alex Presley (2012 Projection): .791 OPS, .345 wOBA

2011 NL Average: .748 OPS, .324 wOBA

Center Field

Andrew McCutchen (2012 Projection): .823 OPS, .360 wOBA

2011 NL Average: .742 OPS, .327 wOBA

Right Field

    The Pirates should absolutely consider trading Hanrahan, however I think Morales is too light a return for him. Don’t get me wrong talent wise he would be an excellent addition but since he is such an injury risk the Pirates need to look at acquiring somebody else.
