What Has Happened?

Everyone knows of the Pirates struggles and everyone also knows why. It is because the pitching has went south. The question is just how drastic has the turnaround been. Let’s take a look at the monthly splits for the Pirates Hitters, Starters and Relievers and see just how bad its gotten.

Hitters

April: .643 OPS

May: .684 OPS

June: .670 OPS

July: .666 OPS

August: .702 OPS

Starters

April: 4.40 ERA, 1.390 WHIP

May: 2.82 ERA, 1.243 WHIP

June: 3.73 ERA, 1.356 WHIP

July: 3.31 ERA, 1.391 WHIP

August: 5.06 ERA, 1.451 WHIP

Relievers

April: 2.40 ERA, 1.178 WHIP

May: 4.26 ERA, 1.407 WHIP

June: 3.10 ERA, 1.379 WHIP

July: 2.63 ERA, 1.326 WHIP

August: 5.71 ERA, 1.592 WHIP

As for the pitching comparison as whole:

1st Half: 3.46 ERA, 1.322 WHIP

August: 5.29 ERA, 1.502 WHIP

As you can see the hitters are as good as they have been all season but that is not making up for the epic collapse of the pitching. The ERA in August is up an amazing 1.83 runs over what the team did in the first half. The WHIP is up nearly a fifth of a point. That may not sound like much but that tranlates to basically 2 extra base runners every game. It has just been incredible how bad things have gotten. Can anbody tell me what has happened?
