2012 Free Agents

I’ll do the pitchers latre but here is the list of free agents to be this offseason. They are seperated by position and ranked by the total WAR they have accumulated since the start of 2009 (2011 WAR is about a week out of date). The Pirates could in theory look at any position for an upgrade (I grouped the OF together). This is sort of a proxy rating system it has some flaws but is a good starting point. I will bold the free agents who I would like to see the Pirates look at and who I think are reasonable targets.

There are a couple of other names I would not mind but I think thats a good list for now. I believe the top priority should be 1B and Michael Cuddyer tops my list of players. It is my preference they go with a Presley-McCutchen-Tabata outfield next year although if they could add a power bat in one of the corners it has to be considered. The other areas of concern are C, 3B and SS. At C my preference would be to resign Doumit as I like the Doumit-McKenry tandem however short of that I think a veteran like Barajas could be a good signing. At SS the Pirates might just be best off picking up Cedeno’s option and letting him play while hoping one of d’Arnaud or Mercer develops enough to take the job from him. I don’t see much power available at 3B so for that reason my preference is the Pirates acquire a versatile player and let him play 3B while they try to get Alvarez back on track. A guy like Infante or Betemit would be good fits.
